I've only recently heard a couple of these scorching hot college shows from 1971, some not being archived at LMA.

Most of you are probably familiar with the Catholic Youth Center classic (4/13/71), but you may not have heard a couple of these high-energy performances from the bands April 1971 swing through the Quaker State.

While these shows are not as tight as the Port Chester run in February, or the monsters of the Fillmore East two weeks later, these performances crackle with energy and have a "bare-wires" intensity that seems to have disappeared with Pigpens hiatus and the addition of Keith a few weeks later.

While these performances are a little "loosey-goosey", the band is taking some chances and its paying off! Dark Star is conspicuously absent, but the superlative second set Jams more than suffice! The sound/mix of all these boards is near-perfect! While the set-lists are somewhat similar, the vibe is markedly different at each of these dynamite gigs!

Jerry is certainly on top of his game, but it is Phil who is most definitely driving the bus during many of these electrifying moments!

With some of the countries best small liberal arts colleges and top universities, Pennsylvania is a bastion of higher learning. Ya think any one's GPA suffered from attending these smoking shows during what must have been mid-term time for many heads?

4/10/71 East Hall, Franklin & Marshall College - Lancaster, PA

Casey Jones, Bobby McGee, Next Time You See Me, Loser, BIODTL, Hard to Handle, Bertha, Playin', Deal, Good Lovin', Truckin, Sing Me Back Home, China Cat > I Know You Rider, Cumberland Blues, Sugar Magnolia > Sunshine Daydream, Midnight Hour, Uncle Johns Band

Sound: A-/A
Score: 96 pts
Vibe: "Smokey Blues"

Notes: Great show! Loser, bluesy H2H, Bertha, Good Lovin', Sing Me Back Home, Cumby all rock! Don't miss the Funkadelic Midnight Hour!

4/12/71 Civic Arena - Pittsburgh, PA

Cold Rain & Snow, Me & My Uncle, Bertha, Next Time You See Me, Playing In The Band, Loser, Cumberland Blues, Hard To Handle, Greatest Story Ever Told > Johnny B. Goode
Truckin' > Drums > The Other One > Wharf Rat, Me & Bobby McGee, Casey Jones, Sugar Magnolia, Deal > Not Fade Away > Going Down The Road Feeling Bad > Turn On Your Lovelight

Sound: A
Score: 98 pts
Vibe: "Blistering high-energy"

Notes: This amazing show is a real sleeper! Amazing bluegrass Cumby, don't miss this killer Phil driven H2H which sadly cuts in the middle of the scorching jam! Second set jams are superlative!

4/13/71 Catholic Youth Center - Scranton, PA

Casey Jones, Mama Tried, Loser, Big Boss Man, Me And Bobbie McGee, Bertha, Cumberland Blues, Big Railroad Blues, Playing in the Band, Hard To Handle, Sugar Magnolia
Trucking > Drums > Good Lovin', I Second that Emotion, Greatest Story > Johnny B. Goode, Uncle John's Band

Sound: A-/A
Score: 97+ pts
Vibe: "Tight and creative"

Notes: Excellent show! Soulful Jer playing on Bobby McGee, Bertha & Cumby rock! Listen to Jer & Phil lock in on H2H! Typical scorching '71 Other One and NFA/GDTRFB/NFA, dont miss the superbly jammed Good Lovin'!

4/14/71 Davis Gymnasium, Bucknell University - Lewisburg, PA

Truckin, Deal, Me and Bobby McGee, Next Time You See Me, Bertha, Playin', Sing Me Back Home, Me and My Uncle, China Cat -> I Know You Rider, Second That Emotion, Casey Jones, Bird Song, Sugar Magnolia, Cryptical > Drums > Other One > Wharf Rat, Hard to Handle, NFA > GDTRFB > NFA, Johnny B Goode

Sound: A/A+
Score" 96+ pts
Vibe "College kids gone wild"

Notes: Stellar early Bird Song, sick intro-jam during Phil driven Other One, slashing H2H, NFA/GDTRFB/NFA.

4/15/71 Allegheny College - Meadville, PA

Big Boss Man, El Paso, Deal, Playin', Bertha, Good Lovin' > Drums > Good Lovin', Next Time You See Me, Sugar Magnolia, Second That Emotion, Truckin' > NFA > GDTRFB > NFA, Casey Jones, Greatest Story, Johnny B Goode

Sound: A
Score; 95 pts
Vibe: "Loosey-Goosey"

Notes: Sadly, several songs are missing and having played five shows in six nights, understandably the energy level and playing are not quite up to the preceding nights. However there are several notable highlights including a jangly H2H, Second That Emotion, spacey Cryptical/Drums/Other One and NFA/GDTRFB/NFA

Oh man, what a set up for GOP...I can hear him coming already with more on his beloved Apr, 71 period.

Hey guy--great to have you back. And talk about having stayed up late to do your homework. Why, just the other day I was mentioned to friend here about how much effort you put into these lists...I am going to have to start really working harder I guess.
